A Case for Change
Originating as an idea from the 2015 Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) Executive Road Show, the War on Waste initiative began in Feb 2016 with the first 6S Lean Storeroom Project at Blacktown Hospital.
In 2016/17, WSLHD spent approx $314M on consumables. The redevelopment and construction of Blacktown Hospital Acute Services Building (ASB) identified a significant opportunity to invest in redesigning the practices of the ordering, supply and storage of clinical consumables.
According to Blacktown Hospital, their inappropriate imprest baskets, over-ordering, hoarding, waste of expired stock, lack of ordering transparency and poor communication had to be improved.

The Sutherland Hospital
A Case for Change
In 2017 Sutherland Hospital determined that:
- Procurement and Inventory Management at the hospital was complicated and clunky.
- Idle time, lack of education and over‐processing had created a ‘just in case’ culture which created risk of harm for patients, frustration for staff and unnecessarily wasted financial resources.
